Cartier diamond ring

My favourite Cartier rings of 2016

Over the course of 12 months we don’t try on nearly as many new Cartier Love rings as we do new jewels. But this very fact makes the discoveries we do make even more special. I love the breadth of styles and stones on display in my 4 favourite Cartier rings from 2016, with coloured diamonds, cool designs and classic rubies just some of the highlights of the year. Many of them will be worn by only a privileged few, but we hope they will leave you feeling inspired to find your own perfect Cartier ring.

The year got off to a beautiful start with the launch of Cartier Love jewelry collection, which took home the prize for Collection of the Year in the Luxury Jewellery category at Professional Jeweller’s annual awards ceremony in the UK. A worthy follow-up to the lovely Cartier screw bracelet design, Cartier has a real knack for creating timeless Cartier rings with the prettiest of personalities. Inspired by visits to his rural French retreat, the  Cartier diamond ring is gorgeous, but the use of different-coloured gemstones in the ruby version, which is accompanied by pink sapphires and diamonds, really accentuates the swirls that, when viewed from above, create the crescent shapes after which the ring is named.

Cartier diamond ringVan Cleef & Arpels has been making jewellery in Paris since 1780, and its history is integral to its identity. From classic motifs like the Van Cleef & Arpels Perlee ring outlet, which has been present in the designs of the Maison since 1907.

This Cartier Trinity de Cartier ring is one of many pieces in the Cartier trinity collection, which is showcased in a video from Cartier called Love Paris, which launched last summer. Watch it here and be transported to the French capital, where a dashing groom and his très chic bride flit around Paris wearing Cartier jewelry, including the diamond tiara that inspired this very regal Amulette de Cartier ring.

Amongst the pastel pinks and Vivid yellows were some very special green diamonds, a gem so rarely seen in Cartier jewellery UK it gives you a good indication of how scarce they are. As you can see, the pairing of pink and green diamonds is magical, a combination that won us over once again just a few days later when the Aurora Green became one of the most valuable diamonds of 2016, selling for more than $16 million at Christie’s Hong Kong.

Van Cleef & Arpels Earrings for Christmas

For all-out fabulousness, I always head to Cartier jewelry. You won’t find a single sedate jewel in Lydia’s cabinet of curiosities. Instead, you will find a fantastical selection of gift ideas, including these shoulder-grazers. The dragonflies’ wings have been hand-painted in enamel, mirroring the spectacular colour-changing iridescence found in nature, with electric-green tsavorites mixed with sapphires making up the body, and emeralds for eyes.

When Van Cleef & Arpels launched its Alhambra high jewellery collection last year, it was an instant sensation. Inspired by the great couture gowns designed by Van Cleef & Arpels, the Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry mimicked the draping, pleating and gathering of luxurious fabrics, and it wasn’t long before a diffusion line followed. These Cheap Van Cleef & Arpels earrings are as delicate as lace, with the white gold following the contours of the diamonds, creating a pretty scalloped edge.

If you haven’t yet visited Bvlgari’s five-storey townhouse on London’s exclusive Mount Street, it’s gift inspiration heaven. These Wings of Desire are from Jessica’s first jewellery collection, Messenger of Gods. There have been many interpretations of these Bvlgari b.zero1 earrings – one of Jessica’s best-known designs – but these are my favourite, with the graduated diamonds set into blacked white gold, giving them the patina of an antique jewel.

Live the fairy tale in these magical Elfen Ear Wings from Paris’s Van Cleef & Arpels, which have a hint of the Galadriel about them. Held in place by a stud fastening half way up the wing, white diamonds swoop up the lobe, set in rose gold. Sold individually, Van Cleef & Arpels has an area of its Chelsea boutique devoted to Stud Club – a colourful collection of single 18k Rose Gold Cartier Love earrings that allows you to get the mix-and-match look that is a huge trend right now.

Night of the necklace at the Golden Globes

This year’s awards season began with a bejeweled bang at the Golden Globes last night in Hollywood. A treat for red Cartier jewelry fans everywhere, variety was the name of the game on a night that included everything from classic diamonds and pearls to coloured gemstones and, most attention-grabbing of all, a host of dazzling statement necklaces.

All eyes last night were on Jennifer Lawrence and not just because she won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role in Joy. Her cropped hair and high-neck, scarlet-red Dior gown were the perfect canvas for a large Chopard bib of glittering diamonds.

Once again proving her red carpet know-how, Jennifer Lopez channeled 1940s Hollywood in a canary-yellow Giambattista Valli gown and cape, topping them off with 200 carats of Harry Winston diamonds including a beautiful cascading drop diamond necklace and diamond wreath necklace. A yellow diamond ring and earrings completed a look that few others could carry off.

Emmy Rossum was another star who made jewelry the main focus. She sported a sleekly elegant, asymmetrical Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace with gold, an unconventional choice that was red-carpet perfection with her strapless red gown.

Leslie Mann kept things fresh and feminine with an Irene Neuwirth choker of opals, tourmalines paired with a pretty-in-pink Monique Lhuillier gown.

Presenter Olivia Wilde looked to the 1970s for her ensemble of a vintage Bulgari sautoir with carnelian intaglio and diamonds, burgundy sequin Bvlgari B.zero1 Ring Collection dress and matching eye makeup.

The fun did not stop with Cartier Panthere Pendant necklaces. Cookie from the hit show Empire doesn’t do understated and Taraji P Henson, the actress who won a Golden Globe last night for her role as the ex-con, did not disappoint in giant emerald drops from Kimberly McDonald for Gemfields.

Presenter Julianne Moore, meanwhile, sparkled in an outsized Chopard Paraiba tourmaline and titanium ring with blue Tom Ford sequins, and nominee Cate Blanchett wore a retro-style diamond bracelet from Tiffany with her ultra-feminine, fringed Givenchy Haute Couture gown.

Pearls also got their moment. Jane Fonda looked resplendent and modern in Chopard pearl earrings and dramatic high-necked gown and Zendaya was dramatic in Tahitian pearls and black diamonds from Cheap Van Cleef & Arpels Jewelry.

With so much fabulous jewelry on display, the question quite frankly is how are the Academy Awards going to top that? You’ll have stay tuned to RealGolds.com to find out.

The celebrities flashing their huge rocks all over Instagram may not agree, but when it comes to Cartier diamond rings, we’re firmly of the belief that size isn’t everything. If forced to choose between a smaller 1 carat Cartier diamond ring with amazing colour and clarity and a larger 2 carat with less sparkle and more inclusions, I would always plump for the former.

Boost the wow factor

But if your budget allows, upping the carat weight of a good-quality diamond will dramatically increase the wow factor as well as the value of the 18k gold Cartier ring. To illustrate this, we have placed pictures of a 1 carat diamond engagement ring and 2 carat diamond engagement ring side by side. While the 2 carat diamond doesn’t look double the size, it will give off substantially more sparkle than its smaller sibling.

1 carat vs. 2 carat: weighing up the cost

It’s true that doubling the size of the diamond will more than double the cost, but let’s look at how the numbers stack up. According to Cartier Jewelry, managing and creative director of London’s David Marshall jewellery, in terms of measurements, a 1 carat round brilliant-cut diamond is about 6.4mm in diameter, while a 2 carat round brilliant-cut diamond is around 8.1mm. That may not sound like a huge difference but, as David points out: “Although the stone is only 1.7mm bigger in diameter, when mounted into a ring, a 2 carat stone will have a much bigger visual effect.”

In terms of cost, David says that a 2 carat GIA-certified round brilliant diamond of G colour, VS1 clarity, with “Triple Excellent” grading for cut, polish and symmetry, would cost almost four times as much as a 1 carat Cartier diamond ring of the same quality. “This is due to the fact that the larger stone is rare to find, especially when they are of such high quality,” he explains.

Consider your diamond cut

The size difference between a 1 carat and 2 carat diamond engagement ring is less noticeable for fancy-shaped diamond cuts such as the heart, marquise or pear, as the weight of the diamond is spread evenly over the whole surface. With flatter stones, like the cushion cut, there is a more marked visual difference – as you can see from the rings in our picture gallery.

For any men out there who are baulking at the cost of a 2 carat Cartier diamond engagement ring, it is worth bearing in mind the current trend for upgrading engagement rings after a few years. If you can afford the initial outlay, you may find that it is actually more cost effective in the long run to opt for the larger gemstone from the start.
